Indian Head Massage Techniques - Upper Back
Champissage, or any other chair massage type, focuses on the upper area of the body: the upper back, shoulders and neck, skull and face. The techniques include general massage procedures as well as techniques specific only to Indian Head Massage.
The upper back massage looks very similar to any Swedish massage session and you can perform any move you consider appropriate for your patient's condition.
Upper Back Massage
Upper Back - Palm friction
Using the heel of your palm, make clockwise circles on the upper back. Make the circles on both sides of the spine trying to cover as much as possible. This relives tensions and breaks up knots. You can support the shoulder with one hand so you can press firmer with the active hand.
Upper Back – effleurage
Using your entire palm, point your fingers upwards, start from the mid section of the back and glide your palms towards neck. Once neck area reached, continue onto shoulders. This relaxes the upper back muscles and the shoulders.
Upper Back – circular, thumb friction
Using your thumb, or your index reinforced with your middle finger, make small circle moves, without gliding over the skin. This procedure should be performed on trigger points, or on spine muscles, along the vertebral column. Alternatively you can use your finger knuckles, as this gives you more force to work with and it's easier on your fingers.
Fingertip compressions – spine muscles
Reinforce your index with your middle finger and place the fingers of both hands on each side of the spine, without touching the spine. Starting at the spine base, or as high as your subject needs it and make short finger compressions of about one to three seconds maximum, then move up a third of inch and do it again, until you reach the end of the spine.
